Tonight’s pregame guest is veteran outfielder Jay Gibbons, who is in the Brewers organization for the second time and has hit a pair of mammoth home runs for the Sounds so far this road trip. Among the topics Gibbons discusses is why he wears just one batting glove at the plate instead of two or none.

The pregame interview for Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader in Iowa is with I-Cubs radio voice Randy Wehofer, who discusses the rarity of playing consecutive doubleheaders, the season so far for Cubs prospects Anthony Rizzo, Brett Jackson and Josh Vitters, and some of the differences he’s seen this year compared to previous seasons since the Theo Epstein Era has begun in Chicago.

You may also recognize Randy or his voice from the film “Sugar,” which attempts to depict what life is like for a minor league pitcher from the Dominican Republic trying to make it to the major leagues.

Tonight’s interview prior to Game 1 of the Sounds’ second consecutive doubleheader is with catcher Jason Jaramillo, who has played in over 100 major league games the past few seasons with the Pirates, spent most of Spring Training this year with the Cubs and now is in his first season with the Brewers organization. He joined the team recently from Double-A Huntsville after Martin Maldonado was called up to Milwaukee and Paul Phillips was traded to Toronto.

The Sounds are in Des Moines, Iowa, right now playing a six-game, four-day series against the Iowa Cubs. It’s a six-game set because the clubs were rained out (and “colded out”) twice back in April. One of the guys I interviewed back then was Taylor Green, who is now with the Brewers. As I was walking back to the hotel the other night I was thinking back to my interview with Green, and something jumped into my brain. In that interview I remember asking Green about his call-up last year from Nashville to Milwaukee and the potential challenge of going from an everyday role at Triple-A to a back-up, pinch-hitting role in the major leagues. And without hesitation, Green commented that it wasn’t a major adjustment for him because he typically gets deep into counts and feels he can battle a pitcher long enough to get a handle on what the pitcher has.

Well, Green knows his game and that ability to work a pitcher without fear of hitting with two strikes. It’s what helped him earn a spot on the Brewers’ NLCS roster last post-season, and it’s what helped him join    a rare group in Brewers history. Both of Green’s homers as a Brewer this year — his first two as a major leaguer — have come in a pinch-hitting role. He becomes just the fourth Brewer ever to have pinch-hit homers for their first two major league homers (also Bob Hansen ’74, Trent Durrington ’04, and former Sound Prince Fielder ’05).

This is Green’s first homer:

And this is his second homer.

Keep it going, Taylor!

Tonight’s pregame interview is with Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus, arguably the best in the business in covering the minor leagues, prospects, amateurs and the annual MLB first-year player draft. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Kevin for several years and have shared a Press Box with him quite often. What impresses me most about Kevin is how he manages to remember details about hundreds of players. You can name almost any amateur or professional baseball player, and Kevin not only has heard of him but also can give you a detailed scouting report, regardless of how obscure you think the player might be.

In this interview, I ask Kevin about the changes in the draft process with baseball’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA); the three Brewers 1st-round picks from Day 1 of the annual MLB draft; his thoughts about the Brewers’ minor league system as a whole; if the Brewers can hang in the NL Central race despite their rash of injuries and which players in the Brewers system Sounds fans should be most excited to see come to Nashville later this season or next year.

When Kevin attends games in person, he usually sits near the scouts behind home plate. You’ll be able to find him — just look for a fedora, which he almost always sports (as you can see below)!

Here is this week’s installment of “Mondays with Mike” with Sounds manager Mike Guerrero. Among the topics: the drastic differences between the first two games of the Sounds’ series with New Orleans; the struggles of Sounds pitcher and Brewers prospect Wily Peralta; Saturday’s solid outing by Claudio Vargas; the Sounds’ pitching plan for the back-to-back doubleheaders (Friday and Saturday) in Iowa later this week; and, with Monday being the start of the annual MLB amateur draft, Guerrero’s memories of becoming a professional when he was signed out of the Dominican Republic by the Brewers in 1987.
